George Harrison wrote that “Give Me Love” is “a prayer and personal statement between me, the Lord, and whoever likes it.” For me, it is the same. “Give Me Love” is a mantra, a prayer, a wish, a meditation, a quiet moment speaking something bigger than oneself into existence.
To cover a song means to reimagine a song; to breathe new life into an already existing being, to see and hear a song in a new way. I wanted to use my voice as my pathway connect to the deeper spiritual and emotional journey described in “Give Me Love.” From honoring the famous guitar lines by singing them, transforming them into meditative chants to beginning with a soft and personal, almost whispered vocal that slowly finds more strength, leading to a more intense but free vocal. On the journey, it’s the realization of one’s possibilities; a joyful celebration that echos the energy of Harrison’s original classic.
Just like we can reimagine a song, we can reimagine our lives right as they’re happening. Nothing is permanent. The message of “Give Me Love” is a needed reminder at this time of year as we’re all both coming together — reaching out to our communities and families, connecting to traditions that root us to our beginnings and where we’ve come from; and looking inward — reflecting on challenges, patterns, and growth from the year, and visualizing and meditating on what’s next to come. With love, with hope — there are no limits to your imagination, to your life.
I feel honored to share my version of “Give Me Love” (Give Me Peace on Earth)” with you and hope it finds its way into the soundtrack your holiday and new year season.
